Speeding Cars
Riverside Road appears to be part of a race circuit for speeding cars - and it is getting worse! The 30mph speed limit which is currently in place is not adhered to whatsoever. It is about time that Fife Council put in speed calming measures on Riverside Road which they have done in surrounding villages with much success.

re: Speeding Cars
I agree, there's often cars speeding up and down Cupar Rd as well and while you have to accelerate to get up the hill,it's still possible to keep to 20-30mph, not 40-50mph. Lots of children going backwards and forwards to school. While I really do not like things like speed humps/cameras, it seems to be the only way to stop dangerous speeding. This was a problem around the last place I lived, some of us warned the Council and the local MP, but were ignored. Someone was hit and sadly died. Let's try and stop this sort of thing happening again.

It would also help road safety if the residents near Riverside Gardens stopped parking on the pavement. In particular, the 'camper van' that is parked half on the pavement most of the time. What sort of person thinks this is sensible.

re: Speeding Cars
ironically 'taxpayer', it is these parked cars that Fife council deem a sufficient solution to traffic calming!! (despite it being pointed out to them that parked cars do not remain so all the time!!) last traffic calming attempts on Cupar Road were short lived--not sure if that reflected their inadequacy or just a need to spend more council money on the removal of fancy bollards. We appear to be competing with Dundee in our current efforts at increasing road signage and furniture in Newport and Wormit. The sad fact is that selfish driving is endemic in our society, and until stricter measures are taken to prevent this and force drivers to think about their actions, no amount of speed signs or traffic calming will alter their attitudes. And as a foot note--I STILL see many local drivers( including local tradesmen in marked vans!!), driving past the schools whilst using mobile phones-- THOUGHTLESS!! er, not to mention, illegal?......

Responding to TAXPAYER, Unfortunately, there is a lack of parking at Riverside Gardens, therefore, residents in this area (mainly elderly people)have difficulty getting access to their homes with shopping etc...Parking on Riverside road is restricted as with many areas in Newport!! Surely cars parked on both sides of the road slow down traffic approaching the school. The camper van you are referring to would be more of a hazard if parked on the road fully as this is a main bus route. Im sure the owner of the van pays road tax like everyone else that owns a car/van, and has as much right to park on the street as everyone else. The council should consider along with road calming measures, easier access to the houses at Riverside Gardens.

re: Speeding Cars
I agree with 'alsotaxpayer'. Parking is very difficult in Riverside Gardens, the council need to make other places to facilitate for all the houses in these areas. As 'alsotaxpayer' said there is a lot of oap's in this area that cannot walk very far to get to their houses, especially with bags etc. So this is the only option for them at the moment until other solutions arise. Yes, maybe parking on the pavement isn't ideal to the people in the area but the people that park their cars there don't have much other choice.

The police have just launched a Community Speedwatch scheme which was piloted in Cupar.Volunteers will receive training by the police. Anyone interested in taking part can contact me on cllr.tim.brett@fife.gov.uk or come along to the next police Community Engagement Meeting in the Blyth hall on the 10th November at 7.00pm in the Blyth Hall.

re: Speeding Cars
Riverside Road is not the only street that this is happening. Since the introduction of the 20mph zones throughout the area I have noticed even more people who don't care for the safety of other road users/pedestrians. You may recall, quite recently, a couple of smashes in the village. The first was an "older gent" during the early hours of a Friday night/Saturday morning who, whilst reportedly drunk, smashed into a parked people carrier on West Road. The reuslt - one Mercedes, one people carrier, one van all WRITTEN OFF and another car damaged. Then one week later, a further four car smash outside the Brig. Then we still have the people who park ILLEGALLY on the corner of the High Street on double yellow lines (even when most/all legal parking spaces are empty) and the parents who park outside the school, opposite the T junction exit of Kirk Road (Highway code rule 243 states "DO NOT stop or park •near a school entrance... •opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space... •on a bend..." This is on top of the numerous incidents my partner and I, and neighbours have witnessed over the last few years. This includes the young person being knocked over by a speeding car after getting off the bus (West Road), a younger driver hitting a parked car on the OTHER side of the road (West Road), two young lads hitting a car exiting from a junction so hard/fast that both cars actually mounted the pavement on the other side of the road (West Road), a neighbours parked car being hit by a car so hard that the airbags of the car being driven activated and tyre marks were left on the road (West Road). The list goes on. Then today, whilst driving up Cupar Road, I had a black 06 Plate Mercedes estate pull out of Kilnburn right in front of me and a silver Ford Focus at St Leonards Road as if they both had right of way. I dread to think what would have happenedf it had been someone travelling at/over the older 30mph limit. Somehow, i think that this problem will not go away any time soon. Having spoke with a few neighbours i am led to believe the council think it is a police matter and vice versa.

re: Speeding Cars
Folks, Its all well and good raising this important issue via this forum however, if you don't tell the Police about your concerns, how can they be expected to address this issue. Why not attended the next Community Engagement Meeting on the 8th March 2012 in The Blyth Hall. Whats a CEM I hear you ask, well let me explain .............. the CEM model was introduced February 2010, and has provided residents, organisations and groups within the North East Fife area with an alternative, more community focused means of influencing the delivery of local policing. The purpose of these meetings is to; • Genuinely engage with members of the Newport, Wormit & Gauldry Community on a one-to-one basis to collectively identify issues that they feel affect them the most. • Develop effective problem solving community-planning partnerships to resolve localised problems for the long-term. If you have a policing concern in your community that you think needs addressed, then come along to the Community Engagement Meetings and tell me about it. This is your chance to influence, both personally and on behalf of the Newport On Tay, Wormit & Gauldry community what your local police officers prioritise in your community. The format of the meetings is very simple. They take place at the same time, same day of the week and venue every two months with the same officer in attendance. Members of the public who attend, identify up to three priorities for the officer to focus on over forthcoming weeks. The officer then does so and returns to the next meeting at which time he/she provides an update on their progress and entire process commences again. Will I see you there? I hope so.
